A Disgrace - National anthem was hacked by Patti LaBelle and Backstreet Boys during World Series

So far, I was able to watch the pre-game ceremonies for Games 1 and 4 of this year's World Series between Tampa Bay and Philadelphia...I was totally appalled and disgusted with the singing of our country's national anthem during those games...

The Backstreet Boys sang in Game 1 and Patti LaBelle in Game 4...anyone, and I do mean anyone, who thought they did a good job in their rendition of the Star Spangled Banner has to be out of their mind...

Major League Baseball should be ashamed in having these artists perform during the World Series...the Boys and LaBelle changed the words, added words, changed the melody, rhythm, and/or everything else...in other words, it sucked and they should be embarrassed...both the Boys and LaBelle's rendition ranks up there with that of Carl Lewis and his off-tune hackjob...

The Star Spangled Banner should be sung with dignity and honor, not as a Top 40 Pop singles hit...this butchery of our song at sporting events must stop!!!...

Below is a clip of the Backstreet Boys awful performance...

Below is a clip of LaBelle's hatchet job...

I agree, was discusting and embarrasing. I was screaming at the TV watching her. I usually get chills when I hear the National Anthem, with her I just felt I wanted to puke.....

You suck b.alls dude! Patti did her thing... she blew it out the water. Just because you're tone deaf and have no taste dosen't mean you need to try and disgrace a legend like LaBelle.

Most people picked to sing our national anthem before a sporting event do a job that ranges from average to terrible. I know it's a hard song to sing, but still...
It's been said that modern singing has been ruined since Whitney Houston's version of "I Have Always Loved You" because everyone (still) tries to sing like she did on that song. And you know what? It's true.
Even Whitney can't sing like that anymore, so why would people with less talent and range try it?
Because they're unsuccessfully trying to be hip, that's why.
People who still choose to sing like that (see American Idol) generally can't sing much at all.
Thank god we don't have to listen to many of them before televised games--tv time is too precious.
Good version: a couple of years ago, Carrie Underwood sang before a Seahawks playoff game. She did a nice, straightforward, unadorned, and, above all, LISTENABLE rendition of The Star Spangled Banner.
I remember thinking, why can't they all just sing it like this?

You know, if these "stars" want to add thier embellishments to the National Anthem, fine. I dont like it, but fine. But DO NOT CHANGE THE WORDS!!!! I counted at least 3 times Patti screwed up the words. I could not believe what I was hearing.

The Hall and Oates guy jacked it up too. Dont they teach this in school anymore? How do you NOT know the words to the National Anthem?

I agree with dominic. It was pure torture listening to her scream and blister the National Anthem. It is supposed to be sung with dignity and grace to honor our veterans who served our country.
She sounded like some cow who was in pain.

Although I didn't see the 'Boys do their rendition, I, too, was screaming at Patti. I mean, at least she could LEARN THE WORDS before going out there...

To the first anonymous poster, who cares that Patti did her thing? Singing the national anthem isn't about making yourself look good and show the world that you still have the skills. it's about paying honor to the country you live in, which means you sing the words as they are.

People stretch words out at times to show their abilities which is fine, I can live with that even thou its annoying. BUT YOU DON'T CHANGE WORDS.

I thought they both sucked. Can we just have someone do it the way it is supposed to be done?

Oddly enough, the only one that did the best justice was Taylor Swift, who's still in her teens!

Get ready for more and more of this b.s. .. OH - the new America is so much more "hip" huh? Sigh!

Anyone who thinks Patti LaBelle was "doing her thing" during the National Anthem is stupid. Same goes with the Backstreet Boys. Sing it like it's meant to be sung -- straight up, pure and dignified.

A real version of the national anthem, like someone mentioned earlier. Carrie Underwood before a playoff Seahawks game.
